What is the LDA and what will I learn about?
The Leadership Development Academy was founded more than a decade ago and has launched scores of emerging leaders who have gone on to serve as better informed and more effective leaders throughout ICA, including its chapters and divisions.
ICA is essentially a grassroots organization that depends on the participation of its members to generate and implement its initiatives in a timely and relevant way. LDA I will provide participants with insights into the nuts and bolts of grassroots leadership from proposing an idea to recruiting others to help, from organizing a group to launching an initiative, and from developing one another to passing the batons of service and leadership.
That’s not all, team members will also learn about the nuts and bolts of the ICA organization and how it is run to get things done. That includes things like Robert’s Rules of Order, who’s who in today’s leadership, our fiduciary responsibilities. LDA I will also introduce participants to vital aspects of ICA’s history and ICA’s ongoing and critical role in shaping the legislation essential to the practice of profession counseling. And since, everyone needs a sense of where ICA is headed, LDA I will expose the cohort to ICA’s current strategic plan to gain a better understanding of the what, how and why of today’s ICA.
While this LDA lays the foundation for future academy experiences and increasingly focused leadership development, LDA is laser-focused on providing participants with an informative and practical experience. And so, LDA I participants will hear from current leaders who will share practical insights gained through their own experiences as team members and leaders. In like manner, the entire LDA experience focuses on the practical, the immediately useful and effective implementation so that each graduate can promptly identify opportunities for service and then engage across the ICA spectrum.
Who may participate?
Anyone with an interest in serving in ICA, one of its divisions, chapters, committees, task forces, etc. We encourage divisions and chapters to sponsor emerging leaders from within their member groups. However, any individual interested in service within the organization may participate in LDA 1.
How long is LDA I?
LDA I is one day and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, this year, we are encouraging participants to attend either the Southern Conference in Collinsville on March 13, 2020 or the Governing Council meeting on June 20, 2020 to observe ICA at work, network with others engaged in service and leadership within ICA, and to share interests, thoughts and questions with one another. LDA participants will be briefly recognized at both events.
What is the cost?
Tuition is $65 and that covers lunch, event materials and 5.5 CEs or PDs.
