Why You Should Know About Legislation:

Licensure laws and other laws impacting counselors often change over time. For example, each year in January legislation in both the Senate and House is introduced in Springfield that can potentially impact the counseling field. That's why it's important to stay informed about the current state of legislation at the state (and federal) level because it can change the way you are able to practice as a clinician.

How Does the Legislative Process Work in IL?

Even if you are not interested in politics or a politician yourself, it is useful to have a basic understanding of how laws are made in Illinois and know how they will affect counselors. You can view a flowchart by the ALCU Illinois (American Civil Liberties Union) of how a bill becomes a law here

  • View a more comprehensive flowchart of how a bill becomes a law by the Illinois General Assembly here.
