Behind Adolescent Self-Injury: How to Talk About why They do it

1 CE

Nona Waller, LCPC

Description:

This webinar will introduce clinicians to the hows and whys of adolescent self-injurious behavior and teach them how to frame these motives to non-clinical supports to reduce reactions of confusion, judgement, and shock. Many adolescents begin therapy following incidents of NSSI. An early necessity in this therapy is discussing the behavior with non-clinical supports, such as family, school personnel, and others. But the motives for engaging in NSSI are varied and continue to be a source of discussion and research. The proper framing of these motivations and proficiency in discussing them can help mitigate the confusion, judgement, and shock that these non-clinical supports may experience. This presentation is designed to give a better understanding of those motivations and help its attendees discuss them with the necessary stake-holders in the client’s world.

Description of the Workshop:

Personality tests create personal insight, but can be dull to complete. This workshop reimagines an older personality assessment, The House-Tree-Person Test, highlighting relationship building and adolescent identity exploration. This approach has surfaced meaningful and sometimes comical conversations to explore the quintessential question of adolescence, “Who am I?” In this workshop, we will explore current research on adolescent identity development. We will practice an experiential approach to the House-Tree-Person test to do identity work. Finally, we will make connections on how this approach can be applied to build strong therapeutic relationships and foster adolescent self-understanding. Come ready to draw, learn about yourself, and build skills to work with teens.

Description of the Workshop:

The Every Student Succeeds Act requires school counselors to incorporate career readiness and career development in their work with adolescents. It is important that school counselors are aware of the necessity to provide equity-based career development to a diverse population of students. Unfortunately, a number of counselors received limited training in their graduate programs to address working with diverse students in career development. This presentation will highlight the need for equity-based career development in schools, and will offer counselors strategies in addressing the need of the lack of equity-based career development in schools.

Description of the Workshop:

When parental separation and new romantic relationships occur, both children and parents may experience stress related to changes in family transitions. Although flexible and open family communication boundaries may help family members to adjust new changes after divorce, parents may experience dilemmas regarding how much, when, and in what way they need to share divorce-related topics and their new romantic relationships with their children without evidence-based guidance. We aim to help attendees think about these dilemmas through case studies and have them practice and apply some counseling skills to be able to effectively assist divorcing and divorced parents.

Description of the Workshop:

The experience of grief is recognized as a natural, complex, and uniquely individual response to a significant loss. Even those who are trained to assist us in navigating the accumulated traumas of life fail to investigate how sorrow impacts our capacity to cope with daily life. Grief is often looked at as a deficit model. Grief can disrupt social relationships and academic performances and cause instability in a child's development. Unhealthy coping can cause difficulty in adjustment and develop severe mental health conditions such as bereavement disorder, depression, and anxiety in the child, which perpetuates throughout adulthood. Learning how to cope with grief is a social process wherein children learn the meaning of death and dying through cues observed and taught in childhood. Children are pattern-seeking, story-telling primates who prefer to give their experiences a meaning and a rationale they have constructed. Recent studies show that Meaning Making is a vital step in the process of grieving. Meaning-making is a subjective process, decided by the grieving individual because each person experiences loss differently. Robert Neimeyer, a psychologist and grief specialist, feels that meaning-making is essential to properly navigate sorrow. It is essential for mental health professionals to break down this traumatic life event for the child to assist them in making new meanings for their identity post-grief. By understanding the influence of grief in their life, gauging the level of agency and locus of control in connection to the death, and lastly, exploring the magnitude of this grief in relation to their existence as a whole, counselors can navigate the child to find a new meaning in their life. Many children have faced bereavement due to the Covid-19 Pandemic in recent years; thus, our work as professionals helping this population cope with the stressors that come with grief is more vital now than ever. Along with this, the increasing violence rate in the state of Illinois also threatens a child’s understanding of mortality. This program proposes to highlight the importance of identity while navigating grief and recognize how identities are socialized to process trauma maladaptively. Additionally, this program will also include how children currently make meaning of grief and address the gap in grief work that may hinder the process of adaptive mourning. The program will encompass intervention strategies for intrapersonal, interpersonal, and coping-solution-focused skill development to demonstrate the role of helping professionals to define and facilitate adaptive grieving through the lens of Positive Youth Development.

Description of the Workshop:

People make sense of experiences both spatially and visually. The creative technique of visual mapping is especially useful for navigating change. Healing is like a journey and creating a visual map can bring a sense of empowerment when one has felt or feels lost or in an unfamiliar place. Maps can parallel the process of change through use of symbolism that depicts time, movement, barriers, relationships, and emotional geographies. Additionally, maps can create connections because they allow people to share their unique narrative in a more tangible way.

Catherine Gruener:

Catherine Gruener, M.A., M.A., LCPC, NCC is an Adlerian-trained licensed clinical professional counselor, national certified counselor, and certified Positive Discipline educator with training in Parent Management techniques from the Yale Parent Center. She holds master’s degrees in neuropsychology and a second master’s degree in counseling psychology.  She is the incumbent Secretary for ACACI and professional member of ICA.  She has worked in the mental health field since 1994 and provides individual and family counseling, parent counseling, and parent education through Gruener Consulting in Oak Brook.

Topic:

One of the intervention modes that is often overlooked when counseling children or adolescents is parent training. Parenting truly is one of the “most difficult and important tasks of life,” (G. Kenneth West, 1986). Parenting not only offers adults a chance to heal their pasts and have a healthy attached relationship, parents and the family unit greatly influence a child’s behaviors towards the tasks of life (work-school for children, love, and relating with others). Adlerian based parent education programs have been found to decrease problematic child behaviors, improve adolescent motivation, improve parent-child relationships, and increase parental well-being, approaches, and attitudes (Lindquist, 2014). Parent Management training has been found to improve child behavior from clinically diagnosed problems to nonclinical levels of functioning in the home, improve maternal depression, decrease stress, and improve family interactions (Kazdin, 2005). By changing parenting approaches, orientations, strategies, and techniques, children benefit: problem behaviors resolve, parent-child relationships improve, and families become more connected.

Such laws are in direct conflict with the values, principles, and ethical standards of the counseling profession. “Conscience clause” legislations are of concern due to the ability of the counseling profession to safeguard the welfare of clients. Much of the focus this legislation centers around the sanctioning of bias and refusal to provide services to affectional and gender minorities, and the intersection of sexual/affectional orientation to spiritual/religious values. The webinar will provide an overview of the legal and ethical issues, as well as specific, targeted, ready for implementation best practices in professional counseling services, education, and supervision.

Presented by:

The Illinois Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities

Webinar Description:

Sexual normativity is the pervasive shared cultural assumption that all people experience sexual feelings and sets apart as deviant those who do not (Carrigan, 2011; Chasin, 2011; Haefner & Plante, 2015). This assumption leads to stigma, discrimination, and erasure toward individuals experiencing sexual dysfunction, partners experiencing mis-matched libidos, and asexual-identified clients. It is also expressed in assumptions about those who are older; people with disabilities; and in issues related to race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and other socially constructed roles. In this workshop, the presenter will familiarize participants with assumptions underlying sexual normativity and its intersectional cultural expressions. Attention will be paid to diagnosis, case conceptualization, and training scenarios, including discussion of sexual normativity in the DSM-5. Case studies will be discussed, and participants will receive a list of resources for further exploration, client education, and advocacy at systemic levels.

I-SAIGE: The Other One Percent: Skills for Working with Asexual Individuals https://www.ilcounseling.org/store/viewproduct.aspx?id=13306050 https://www.ilcounseling.org/store/viewproduct.aspx?id=13306050  In 2004, Anthony F. Bogaert found that one percent of the population answered yes to the question "I have never felt sexually attracted to anyone" (p. 281), revealing the prevalence of asexuality in modern world. In the 13 years since Bogaert's study, scholarship surrounding the asexual populations has focused on defining and quantifying the orientation, but little has addressed asexuals' lived experiences and developmental and clinical needs. Counselors must respond to calls by scholars and the asexual community to become familiar with the unique developmental, systemic, and clinical concerns of an "invisible orientation" (Decker, 2014) whose very existence is routinely questioned and pathologized by those in the helping professions. This webinar will start by briefly reviewing foundational concepts related to asexual identities, sexual normativity/privilege, and common misconcep

At conclusion of webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the definitions and constructs unique to the asexual population.
2. Understand and discuss sexual normativity, sexual privilege, the culture of compulsive sexuality, and the resulting marginalization of asexual individuals by the sexu-society.
3. Consider the recent shift in research towards qualitative inquiry and how this supports work done in wellness-minded and developmental paradigms.
4. View the uniquely robust online presence of the asexual community and what it tells us about the needs of the population, what interventions might be helpful for its members, and issues pertaining to identity development and research methodology.
5. Discuss and give feedback to the presenter's emerging model of identity development tasks useful for conceptualizing and creating goals with asexual clients.
6. Walk away with a handout with practical suggestions for literature, online resources, books, and films that can enhance continued development of affirming practice and serve as homework/bibliotherapy for future asexual-identifying clients, their partners, families, and

About the Presenter

Dr. Kristina L. Hill, a licensed professional counselor, educator, and scholar.

Dr. Hill received her doctorate in Counselor education and supervision from Northern Illinois University, her master’s in clinical mental health counseling from Adler University in Chicago and her bachelor’s in psychology from University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  She is currently a Professor at Adler University. She has over 10 years of experience in the mental health field. Areas of clinical specialization and interest include but are not limited to multicultural concerns, domestic violence, trauma, crisis, anxiety, depression, PTSD, grief and loss, and client advocacy.

Additionally, Dr.Hill has over  8 years of experience in higher education as an administrator and college counselor. She has been an active leader in ICA as  current President Elect, a former division liaison, past president of ICSJ, and past president of the Black Counselors Association Chapter. She provides a number of workshops both within ICA and other professional settings to assist in training and providing resources for multicultural competent and advocacy practice or diverse clientele.

Dr Hill approaches counseling from a collaborative model, which allows her to work with her clients to define concerns and goals for their lives. Dr. Hill uses holistic wellness techniques and trauma informed interventions to assist clients in identifying challenges and learning new methods of life management and healing. Kristina notes this about the experience of counseling: “Counseling allows opportunity for advocacy and prevention instead of viewing individuals within a deficit or with a prognosis that requires “fixing”. Healing is about more than just a quick fix; it is a process and counseling embraces the process from the start and beyond!”

 Workshop Description

For most of the 55 years since Stonewall, the United States saw the development of a national movement to improve the lives of gender, sexual, and affectionally diverse people, and by 2023, 84% of non-LGBTQ Americans said they supported equal rights for the LGBTQIA+ community and 91% stated that LGBTQIA+ Americans should not face discrimination (GLAAD). However, contrary to these gains, the years 2021, 2022, and 2023 each set new records for anti-LGBTQIA+ legislative bills (Equality Federation, 2023) – many based on false narratives that exploited fear and misunderstanding. As a result of these recent trends, a 2022 US Census Bureau poll found that 50% of LGBTQ+ respondents between the ages of 18 and 29 reported symptoms of depression, and 60.8% reported symptoms of anxiety, compared to 28.9% and 35.4% of their non-LGBTQ+ peers respectively. Professional helpers are in a unique position to serve the needs of gender, sexual, and affectionally diverse clients at the individual, family, and institutional level, but many report that doing so effectively is overwhelming due to difficulty keeping up with evolving heterogeneity within the population, shifting language and definitions, and mounting systemic threats that create barriers to affirming care. In this three-hour webinar, the presenter will take a wide view approach to provider education - utilizing knowledge, awareness, skills, and advocacy to increase participant curiosity, empowerment, and practical skills. The presenter will discuss important factors impacting client/provider relationships, including acknowledging and addressing an unfortunate history of abuse by the mental health profession itself which has left LGBTQ+ persons rightfully skeptical of our intentions. From there, she will cover common individual and systemic issues facing clients who identify in these groups, specific methods professional helpers can use to communicate both an affirming and celebratory stance that welcomes client growth, and common mistakes made when working with these groups. A case study covering both clinical and supervisory considerations will be presented, and additional resources for continued growth and development will be provided.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this webinar, participants will:

  1. Be able to articulate factors that impact therapeutic relationships between professional helpers and LGBTQIA+ clients, including barriers to provider self-awareness and steps providers can take to ameliorate the latter.
  2. Name at least four individual and four systemic common issues that lead LGBTQIA+ clients to seek professional services.
  3. Discuss LGBTQIA+ clients’ reticence to engage with health and mental health professionals and name steps providers can take to communicate affirming/celebratory stances while also helping clients navigate non-affirming/abusive systems.
  4. Learn specific skills that assist with broaching discussions of power, privilege, and difference when they occur in and out of sessions.
  5. Name four common mistakes made by well-meaning providers regarding treatment and alternative strategies to prevent and address these mistakes when they occur.
  6. Set SMART goals to advocate for continued training of themselves and advocacy within their practice sites, as well as resources with which to accomplish them.

Workshop Description

Grief is an existential reality we all experience, rather than something we get over or problems we fix. Counselors may struggle to identify grief in presenting problems as it is often considered only when someone speaks of death; however, loss can take many forms across the lifespan. To further complicate grief work, counselors’ own experiences around loss can shape their willingness to approach and meet clients in their pain. This presentation will cover current definitions of grief, loss, and bereavement, discuss the types of grief, and invite counselors to reconceptualize grief to assist clients. This workshop will help counselors identify and effectively work with death and non-death related grief. We will explore how to reconceptualize grief through a developmental lens and offer interventions.

Workshop Description

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2011 granted counselors access to military populations. Since then, counselors have been engaging in research and advocacy around counseling military populations; however, much work still needs to be done to ensure competence in this arena. Psychologists and social workers have a long history providing mental health services to active duty service members, Veterans, and their families but the need for counselors to meet the increasing demands and mental health struggles is great. To do so, counselors must be aware of Exemplary Practices for Military Populations to insure ethical and culturally informed practices. This workshop will cover the history of mental health services, literature and research, the Exemplary Practices, and implications for practice.

Workshop Description

From its roots in Stoic philosophy to its refinement by Adler, Beck and Ellis (RET), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely practiced evidence based treatment approach for mental health disorders. The main principal behind CBT is that the thoughts and beliefs of individuals, families, work groups, religions and societies affect how they operate in very powerful ways. Mistaken beliefs and negativistic thinking can both contribute to and maintain negative behavioral patterns, interactions, and even mental illness (Sexton, 2003). CBT works on changing negative thought patterns into reality based ones that result in positive, constructive behavior changes.

About the Presenter

Norman C. Dasenbrook, MS, LCPC has been practicing various forms of RET and CBT for over 35 years. He has practiced CBT working as a counselor with the chronic mentally ill in an outpatient community mental health center, as a clinical director of an outpatient substance abuse center, divorce mediator, employee assistance program provider, counselor in private practice and as well as an organizational consultant working with business and industry. Norm will discuss the theory of CBT in a way that can be applied by clinicians and clients alike. Moreover, he will present his most effective CBT based techniques used to treat depression, anxiety, ADHD, and assist businesses in cultural change and developing high functioning work teams.

Webinar Description:
COVID-19 has presented couples with unique and stressful challenges that have stressed their relationships to maximum levels. All of the normal coping strategies that individuals in troubled relationships often employee (e.g. meeting with friends, distraction strategies through work, having defined times away from one another) have not been available to couples. Additionally, extreme health, financial, and increasing mental health hardships have pushed some couples to the breaking point. This presentation will explore specific strategies to counsel couples in crisis due to the COVID-19 outbreak and assist practitioners in their work with these couples. Counselors will be provided specific interventions, techniques, and strategies to help couples deal with the immense stress placed on their relationships.

Webinar Objectives:
1) Provide counselors with a theoretical overview for counseling couples in crisis.
2) Explore specific strategies for effective couples counseling for couples in crisis.
3) Provide counselors with creative interventions for working with couples.

Webinar Goal:
To inform counselors of effective counseling strategies with couples coping with the stress caused by COVID-19.

Webinar Description:
Trauma alters how youth perceive the world around them, creating dissonance, mistrust, isolation, confusion, anxiety, and depression. Everyday anxiety and stress can exacerbate trauma responses, and now school counselors (SCs) are dealing with outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic where students are feeling even more isolated. The role of SCs can be chaotic and overwhelming under normal conditions, and yet are now uniquely positioned and called to address students' needs from a trauma-informed lens, which is critical considering the events of present day. This workshop will focus on the impact of child and adolescent trauma, including adverse childhood experiences, perceived and real traumatic events, violence, stress, and COVID-19. It will give tips to build resilience, opportunity for self-discovery, and allow for sharing of successes. Additionally, participants will process their own traumatic responses as caregivers and consider how this affects their work with students.

Webinar Objectives:

1. Increase understanding of being a trauma-informed school counselor
2. Review their own traumatic experiences and how it affects their work with students
3. Consider positive interventions that will increase student resilience and reduce stress, anxiety, and the impact of COVID-19.

Webinar Goal:
The goal of this workshop is to increase school counselors' awareness of being trauma-informed in their work with students and how to build resilience in their responses.

Webinar Description:
Children encounter numerous forms of stressors in their daily living. Some of these stressors are mild, and the child can continue to function with minimal negative consequences. Other stressors are more impactful on the child's development and can result in various levels of impairment. Often children experience difficulties in their social-emotional functioning when faced with severe stressors. The ACE survey outlines the negative impact on a child's overall living when one or more stressors are present in their life. The ability of a counselor to understand what influences a child's social-emotional development is critical to helping that child adjust successfully. This workshop will focus on identifying various stressors in a child's life that can have a negative outcome on their overall academic, social, and emotional development. Additionally, participants will learn about the role of healthy relationships and techniques to endure adverse experiences in childhood.

Webinar Objectives:
Participants will learn about the negative life experiences that impact a child's social-emotional development. This webinar will focus on the identification of healthy relationships and techniques to implement in counseling as a way of countering these adverse childhood experiences.

Webinar Goal:
Participants will learn about the various adverse experiences that impact a child's social-emotional development and how to counter these experiences.

According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, “Children who suffer child traumatic stress are those who have been exposed to one or more traumas over the course of their lives and develop reactions that persist and affect their daily lives after the events have ended.” Over the past twenty-five years, research in neurobiology has shown that exposure to one or more traumatic events can cause permanent disruption of the autonomic nervous system, and set in motion changes in children’s lives that affect their over-all functioning socially and academically.
In this webinar, the presenter will discuss specific trauma-focused therapies that are effective in reducing traumatic stress reactions. Participants will learn how trauma-focused therapies help the brain to reprocess traumatic stress reactions no matter what culture a child originates from or what types of traumatic events were experienced by the child. We will also discuss the new challenges for therapists working with children since the onset of COVID-19.

One of the greatest challenges is doing Telemental Health with children. We will discuss creative ways to keep children engaged and provide effective stress-reducing strategies. The presenter has over twenty-five years of clinical experience working with children as young as three years of age. She has worked with children in both agency and private practice settings who have experienced sexual, physical and emotional abuse. She has also worked extensively with both international and domestic adoptees and their families.

Webinar Objectives:

1. Identify signs of traumatic stress in children
2. Describe trauma-informed therapy
3. Identify trauma-focused therapies
4. Present sessions with children utilizing trauma-focused therapies

Webinar Goal:

The goal of this webinar is to help therapists gain a greater understanding of how trauma affects children and the types of therapies that are effective in the treatment of traumatic stress in children.
